Hardwork and Expectations

You sometimes desperately want something and you strive hard, staying up late working out every possibility to obtain that and you feel that you should get it raising your expectations. But then the unthinkable happens and you don't get it. You have done all that you can but still fail. Then there are times where in we are not that very keen to get something but we just give it a shot anyway and you taste great success. Neither have you strived hard nor are you going to be disappointed if you don't get it. Has this ever happened to any of you? I have experienced this quite often.
This kind of reminds you of the Bhagawad Gita which says do duty and leave the rest to the Almighty. All this is fine but then what happened to the concept of hardwork pays. If you have worked hard and you don't get the returns and if this happens quite often then you will eventually lose confidence. I don't quite get it. What is that I have done wrong? Does it mean we should shun any expectation in our life? I cannot quite imagine a life without expectations.
This is quite an enigma to me. Will the answers ever dawn on me only He knows.

Hindu philosophy makes you a *big loser* while giving you the impression that you are being saintly.

"Dude, you do everything... but don't expect anything in return!"
This was told to keep everybody mediocre, contended and unwilling to fight for bigger things in life.

Is Communism similar to Karma yoga?
U do all the work, without thinking abt the fruits of labour and the Govt gets all the money.
