My Wishlist for India

India is growing at a rapid pace for the past decade or so and it has made much strides but there is still a lot to be done in a lot of fields ranging from agriculture to infrastructure, from governance to law & order and so on.
The following is a short list of things that I would like to see happen in India. The following list is not a ordered set and hence has not been awarded any priority.
  1. Build lakes and water reservoirs both for improving the water table and to help in irrigation, drinking water and so on.
  2. Reclaim land from filled up lakes
  3. Rejuvenate lakes and make them the responsibility (legally liable) of the community surrounding them and penalize them if the lake is polluted
  4. Make Rain Water Harvesting a legal requirement for all houses both in urban and rural areas.
  5. Scientific planting of trees to compensate for all those lost in infrastructure development.
  6. Resort to scientific pruning as opposed to felling of trees
  7. Improve forest cover from the present around 20% to 33% (which is the optimum average for every country)
  8. Create Tree Parks in every ward of every city and town and even village
  9. Make random tree felling a federal offence and use the maze of beauracratic procedures to fell a tree so that people are discouraged. Ofcourse, we need to take into account the need to fell a tree in the eventuality that it is unstable.
  10. Make tree planting compulsary for apartment complexes and house plots equal and above 2400 sq.ft. For houses smaller than 2400sq.ft. make it mandatory to plant a tree outside their homes.
  11. Tree species to be used should be from one of the local varieties
  12. Increase the green belt area around every city/town by atleast 25% and incorporate such features in cities/towns that are not already there
  13. Second Green Revolution in Agriculture. This one has to be used to reduce the dependence of agriculture on monsoon rains by using drip irrigation where possible, local production and consumption where ever possible
  14. Improve food storage including with cold storage for vegetables, fruits and possibly flowers
  15. Pass a law to disallow the usage of Genetically Modified food (BT food) as it is impossible to know the side effects which would require to watch generations to study the effects of such food and we can do without them
  16. Facilitate and encourage local food production and consumption through higher taxes for food transportation from across districts
  17. Disallow indiscriminate conversion of agricultural land to residential or commercial purposes
  18. Make agricultural education mandatory till college
  19. Allow private companies to get into agricultural production (ofcourse having strict observations on them so that they dont bring in GM food or raise prices). If it does not allow in agricultural production, they should atleast allow them in buying and selling, so as to avoid middlemen.
  20. In urban transportation, encourage public transportation, mainly by encouraging Bus Rapid Transit systems
  21. Scientific designation of bus routes, so that as much as the city is covered and connected to other cities
  22. Discourage private transport by increasing road tax and insurance, cost of issuing license
  23. Implement Metro and Commuter Rail services where possible
  24. Use mono rail in smaller cities
  25. In places where there are multiple modes of public transport, introduce seamless tickets
  26. Improve last mile connectivity
  27. Introduce park and travel in bus stands and metro/monorail/commuter railway stations
  28. Improve customer service in public transport
  29. Charge for overnight parking on roads in residential areas, even if outside their houses
  30. Implement plans to change or force people to change their attitude that travelling by public transportation is below their dignity and make it a pride (introduction of volvos is one, metro is another, convenience and cost could be another)
  31. Vehicle Actuated singnalling systems
  32. Synchronized Singals
  33. Active execution of all rules and penalize traffic violators
  34. Cancel their license for 3 or more serious traffic violations
  35. Disseminate real time traffic information to people
  36. In Law and Order, encourage community patrolling and neighbourhood watch
  37. Enable all taxis, including private ones to be fitted with homing devices or GPS trackers to track the taxi
  38. Make raping punishable by capital punishment
  39. Reduce urban poverty by engaging people in infrastructure development
  40. Discourage people moving to urban areas by providing employment in the vicinity of their neighbourhood
  41. Make agriculture an attractive occupation
  42. In Taxation, reduce slabs and bring more people under the tax bracket.
  43. Have laws to enable people to convert their black money to white without any penalty for a period of 5 years and beyond that make active raids to remove black money
  44. Actively pursue with tax havens across the world and get the accounted money from them into the government coffers. This is possible by people pressure
  45. Make it possible for people to bring down a government within the 5 years if some gross mishandling is done with appropriate rules.
  46. Make party manifestos legally bound and the possibility to be taken to court if they are not implemented or steps taken to implement them
  47. Make judiciary efficient and use technology to increase solutions to cases
  48. Make all cases time bound, so that no case drags on for more than 5 years
  49. Make look east a policy for the next 10 years and improve the eastern states
  50. Bring in Police reforms and reduce political interference within police
  51. Increase pay to constables and make them more responsible
  52. Bring in reforms to cyber laws
  53. In education, encourage vedic mathematics in schools
There are a lot more and I need to think of them in more depth to enumerate them. Please add to the list your wishlist. Once we have a exhaustive list, we can pass it on to groups such as praja, etc... to take it up on our behalf.
