Back to blogging after a very brief break. The topic I have chosen this time is about selfishness or selflessness. Like most of my blogs this one too had its origin in a conversation with my father. As usual I am writing to get all your opinions on this.
We say that any deed performed for self gain is called selfishness and any deed performed for the good of others is a selfless deed. But is there really something called selflessness.
The reason this question arises should be evident but I will explain my view point on this. When I perform charity it is to gain good will, name, or expecting a return favour when we need or at the least to accumulate Punya on my journey to meet God on the D-Day. It is the same case when we help somebody. So everything boils down to selfishness. The only reason we can give for calling these deeds selflessness is by emphasizing the point that others gain more than I do.
So is there any point in calling any deed selflessness? I do not know.
No offence to any one intended but just a thought that struck my mind. I wrote this weblog only for the sake of writing.
As usual I thank you for all your patience and as usual feel free to comment.

Hi vivek
This thought had crossed my mind too many a times.
but then why do we find the so called selflessness difficult ,but this so called selfishness easier to be?
maybe overcomming this so called selfishness itself a gr8 thing and should very much be appreciated.
Vivek,
I too go with ur line of thought that there doesnt exist something called selflessness at all... any deed that seems altruistic from outward, would certainly have an ulterior motive thats selfish... I dont do something for the heck of it, if i have nothing to gain, even if it be some self satisfaction or peace of mind...
well, if u havent read it already, read the discussion on "Selfishness and selflessness" between Roark and Wynand, in Fountainhead ofcourse. Amazing stuff!
And slightly off the topic, I dont get the point why you have to thank people each and everytime, for reading ur blogs.. Someone chooses to read it by his/her own freewill... you are not imposing your thoughts on anyone... and they are not really doing you a favor by reading ur blogs.. hence, this expression of gratitude seems totally out of place!
Am sorry for spamming ur blogspace with a blogsized comment!

From the apologies, disclaimers etc it appears Vivek a.k.a. Venix would've made an excellent Lawyer specialising in writing legal contracts and product disclaimers!
