Country Specific Technology

Ever wondered how a technology that is a super hit in a particular country does not have any impact on another country. For eg. Answering Machines are a huge hit in the US while it is a dud in India. The reason for this is that is when people call up in India they would rather have the phone ring and have no one answer them rather than an answering machine greeting them. They seem it to be a waste of a call and also they are not used the concept of leaving a message. This is not just true of the rural people but also of that of the educated elite. For eg., I have a big problem in leaving messages as I have no idea as to what to say.
Similarly, automatic transmission cars are such a great hit in the US while it did not even dent the market in India. The reason the automatic transmission cars guzzle a lot of fuel when driven at lower driving speeds as the automatic gear change takes place based on the speed of travel and in India the average speed is low and hence manual transmission is great as we can still drive in a higher gear (lower gear ratio) inspite of the speed and hence save fuel and in India fuel economy is a big thing for most of the people.
Dishwashers are another example of that did not take off in India. The reason the water consumption is very high in a dishwasher and water is scarce and we are taught to conserve every bit of it to the maximum possible extent while you cannot find a single house here in the US which does not have one.
Similarly, the mobile technology seems still taking off. The reason India has long done away with charges for incoming calls and incoming SMS (text messages) embracing this in the biggest way possible while it is still very much present in the US.
There are a lot more such technologies. If you are aware of more put in your thoughts.
